Unexpected changes and strategic moves often keep fans on their toes. Rangers FC supporters might not have anticipated alterations to their left-back position, but recent developments suggest that the status quo may soon be disrupted. As the contract of Bornor Barisic nears its end, Rangers are exploring options to reinforce their squad, with the emerging talent Josh Doig at the center of attention.?

Who will be Playing Left-Back for Rangers come February?

Bornor Barisic, an integral part of the Rangers left-back position, is in the final months of his contract, opening the door for potential negotiations with other clubs. Simultaneously, the name Ridden Yilmaz has surfaced in connection with January transfer moves, creating a stir among the Rangers faithful. Both Barisic and Yilmaz currently hold the left-back position for Rangers, but changes appear imminent.

The Josh Doig Factor

Recent reports indicate that Rangers may have secured a deal for Josh Doig, with an agreed-upon fee of £3.5 million. However, Doig’s current club values the talented left-back at £5 million, sparking speculation about the negotiation dynamics between the two clubs. At 21 years old, Doig has already represented the Scottish Under-21 International team and has showcased his skills in Serie A, playing against the likes of Napoli, Juventus, and Milan while donning Verona’s colors.

Doig’s journey in Serie A began when he joined Verona in 2022. Since then, he has started 10 games this season and accumulated a total of 35 appearances, netting two goals along the way. Having previously played for Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League, Doig possesses a deep understanding of the Scottish game. Interestingly, Hibernian stands to benefit from Doig’s success, holding a sell-on clause of up to 28% of profits generated if Verona decides to part ways with the talented left-back.

Potential Suitors and Transfer Dynamics

Several clubs are eyeing Doig, adding complexity to the potential transfer. Monza, and Torino from Serie A have all expressed interest, making it unclear where Doig might end up. Notably, a deal involving Ridden Yilmaz, with Verona and Rangers exchanging players, has been hinted at, but a straightforward swap seems unlikely due to Verona’s financial goals.

Amidst the transfer speculations, some media outlets have suggested that Doig might not be eyeing a return to Scotland, with Torino being his preferred destination. However, Torino’s manager, Ivan Juvic, has distanced himself from such rumours, adding an element of uncertainty to Doig’s potential return to the Scottish football scene.

As Rangers continue their push for the Scottish Premier League title and remain active in the Europa League, the addition of a promising left-back like Josh Doig could significantly bolster their squad. The intricate web of negotiations involving Verona, potential suitors, and Hibernian’s sell-on clause adds layers of complexity to the transfer saga. Rangers fans await eagerly, hopeful that a deal can be struck to bring the talented Scottish left-back back to familiar grounds. The January transfer window promises excitement, with the fate of Josh Doig hanging in the balance.

Update on 13th January 2024

Marseille put a late big of £4.3million for the services of Josh Diog which has been accepted. The player has also reportedly agreed personal terms Marseille. We now expect this transfer to be confirmed over the weekend. This is a blow for Rangers in our opinion, however Rangers are unlikely to consider matching this fee or the personal terms being offered by the French outfit.
