Rangers are set to bank a major windfall with the imminent sale of Jefte to Brazilian giants Palmeiras.

The left-back, who joined from Fluminense last summer for around £800,000 after a loan spell in Cyprus with APOEL, will make the switch in a deal worth £6million — delivering a profit of roughly £5million in less than a year.

It’s understood Rangers have a modest sell-on clause owed to Fluminense, but the club have smartly negotiated an additional sell-on clause with Palmeiras, meaning there’s potential for another windfall down the line if Jefte’s career continues its upward trajectory.

From Backup to Regular Starter

Jefte was originally brought in as a long-term prospect, expected to serve as understudy to a more established left-back. But when circumstances with Ridvan Yilmaz’s availability took an unexpected turn, the young Brazilian ended up playing the second-highest number of minutes of any Rangers player last season.

This was no small task given the turbulent backdrop — a campaign marked by changes in ownership, managerial upheaval, and a complete overhaul of the club’s leadership team. It was hardly the ideal environment for a 20-year-old to develop, yet Jefte was there when needed.

Talented but Not the Finished Article

There’s no doubt Jefte has attributes that catch the eye — pace, strength, and an ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas — traits that have attracted interest from several clubs. However, he’s still a work in progress.

Russell Martin’s system places heavy emphasis on full-backs inverting into midfield, a tactical demand that doesn’t naturally suit Jefte’s game. Combine that with some defensive weaknesses still to be ironed out, and it’s easy to see why Rangers view this sale as a sensible move.

Left-Back Recruitment Now a Priority

Jefte’s departure could be just the start of Rangers’ reshuffle at left-back, with Ridvan Yilmaz also heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox. Should both players leave, Russell Martin will be left with few natural options. While Max Aarons can fill in on the left, he has looked far more comfortable in his natural right-back role. Robbie Fraser, meanwhile, appears to be well out of the first-team picture at present. That means Rangers may need to recruit not just one, but potentially two new left-backs before the transfer window closes.

A Sensible Decision for Both Parties

Given the right coaching and time, Jefte could certainly develop into a top-level defender. But at Rangers, time is a luxury very few players are afforded.

For the club, this is a prime example of smart trading — signing a young player for under £1million, giving him valuable game time, and selling for a sizeable profit while retaining a stake in his future value. For Jefte, the move to Palmeiras offers the chance to return to Brazil’s top flight and continue his development away from the relentless pressure of Ibrox.

If the deal is completed in the coming days, Rangers will be in the market for a new left-back before the close of the transfer window — and with £6million incoming, they will have the resources to make it happen.
