The Conor Coady-to-Rangers saga has taken a new twist, with Sky Sports now reporting that Wrexham have submitted a £2 million bid for the experienced centre-back.
The 32-year-old defender, who has one year remaining on his Leicester City deal, is said to be open to leaving the King Power Stadium. Coady featured 22 times in the English Premier League last season, as Leicester were ultimately relegated in 18th place—13 points adrift of safety.
A Deal That’s Dragged On
Rangers were first linked with Coady early in the summer, and there’s no doubt his experience and leadership qualities would strengthen our backline. But the deal has dragged on for weeks now, and it’s become increasingly clear the holdup wasn’t from the player’s side.
From what we’ve heard, Leicester reportedly changed the terms—increasing the asking price after a verbal agreement had been reached. Then, any momentum on the deal was delayed further by the appointment of their new manager.
Djiga Signing Changes the Picture
Since those early Coady links, Rangers have acted elsewhere—bringing in Nasser Djiga on a season-long loan from Wolves.
The 22-year-old Burkina Faso international has impressed during pre-season, showing composure, physicality and strong anticipation at the heart of defence. Djiga’s arrival adds youth and athleticism to Russell Martin’s backline though Rangers are still looking to add in this area, it can’t be at any cost.
Wrexham’s Bid Changes the Picture
Now, with Wrexham stepping in and seemingly willing to pay £2 million, this puts the whole deal in a new light. Rangers were believed to be at the table at around £1.6 million, which already seemed steep given the player’s age, contract situation, and likely high wages.
If Wrexham are prepared to pay that kind of money and offer a lucrative package, Rangers should walk away. As much as we respect what Coady would bring in terms of experience and defensive organisation, this is no longer a smart deal for us.
Time to Move On – There Are Better Options
With the need for reinforcements not only at centre-back but also at left-back, we need to make sure every penny spent this summer is good value. Rangers now have Djiga, Souttar, Balogun and Nsiala as options, and the focus should turn to other areas or longer-term targets.
There’s no shortage of defenders across Europe and the UK with strong potential, and Coady—despite his credentials—simply doesn’t offer the right value at this stage of the rebuild.
