Rangers have confirmed the signing of Joe Rothwell from AFC Bournemouth on a three-year deal, as Russell Martin continues to reshape his squad for the new campaign.
The 30-year-old midfielder brings experience, versatility and a winning mentality to Ibrox, having played under Martin previously and enjoyed back-to-back promotions with Southampton and Leeds United. Rothwell becomes the latest addition in what is quickly becoming a purposeful and strategically assembled squad under the new Head Coach.
Rothwell: “It Was an Immediate Yes”
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Rothwell said:
I am delighted to have the deal done and be here. It is brilliant. The size of the club speaks for itself and as soon as the interest was there it was an immediate yes from me.
With Russell coming in too it made that decision a little bit easier. I know what type of guy he is and how he wants to do things. That was an even bigger pull for me, but the club speaks for itself.

There’s no doubt Rothwell understands the pressure and expectation that comes with pulling on the famous blue shirt. And with over 250 senior appearances across England’s top three divisions, he looks more than ready for the challenge.
What Type of Player Have Rangers Signed?
Rothwell is a strong, physical midfielder who isn’t afraid to put a foot in — but he’s far more than just steel. He’s composed on the ball, capable of gliding past opponents with intelligent movement, and is excellent at carrying the ball through the middle third into attacking areas.

He’s the kind of player who can break the lines with either a driving run or a precise pass — an asset Rangers have arguably lacked since the best days of Glen Kamara. Importantly, his delivery from set-pieces is also a standout attribute. With Tavernier and Rothwell now both capable of putting in dangerous balls, Rangers have another key weapon in tight games.
Tactical Fit and Russell Martin’s Plans
Russell Martin knows exactly what he’s getting. The Gers boss spoke highly of Rothwell’s qualities:
He is a player who we thoroughly enjoyed working with during my time at Southampton. His leadership, professionalism and quality were a huge asset. He is joining on the back of two promotions so helps bring a real winning mentality to the group.
Russell Martin, Head Coach, Rangers Football Club
That winning mentality cannot be overstated. Rothwell helped Martin’s Southampton gain promotion back to the Premier League, and then did the same with Leeds United while out on loan last season — a remarkable back-to-back achievement that adds real credibility to Rangers’ dressing room.
Whether he plays as part of a midfield two, a more advanced eight, or even in a free role, Rothwell gives Rangers flexibility and strength in depth. With names like Diomande, Barron and Raskin also competing for places, Martin now has the kind of midfield blend he’s used to building his system around — technical quality, tactical understanding, and high energy.
A Signing That Fits the Strategy
Rothwell’s signing also speaks volumes about the recruitment strategy now taking shape at Ibrox. Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell commented:
He has a wealth of experience in the game having performed strongly over a number of years at various levels in England. We believe he has the right temperament and quality as a player to be a strong addition to the squad and look forward to seeing his impact.
Kevin Thelwell, Director of Football, Rangers Football Club
Thelwell and Martin are clearly working hand in hand to bring in players who fit not just in terms of ability, but also personality and mentality — men who can handle the spotlight at Rangers and contribute immediately.
Rothwell ticks every box: he’s proven, physical, technically sound, and understands exactly what his manager wants. At 30, he’s at the perfect age to bring leadership without being past his peak.
Verdict on Rangers Singing Joe Rothwell
This is a signing that should excite Rangers fans. Rothwell brings a directness and quality in midfield that will give the team a new dimension. His history with Martin should allow for a smoother bedding-in period, and his character — described as professional, driven, and committed — is just what this Rangers squad needs as it gears up for a crucial season both domestically and in Europe.
He’s not a marquee signing in name — but this could be one of the most important additions of the summer.
