Jose Cifuentes has sealed a season-long loan move to MLS side Toronto FC, with the deal including an option to buy.
The 26-year-old midfielder first arrived at Ibrox two years ago from LAFC, where he had impressed in Major League Soccer. However, his time in Glasgow has been anything but straightforward, with this now being his third loan move away from Rangers.
Cifuentes was initially brought in by Michael Beale in 2023, but with Beale dismissed just two months later, his chances of settling were hampered. A handful of appearances followed under Philippe Clement before he was shipped out to Cruzeiro for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.
Last term, the Ecuadorian spent the year in Greece with Aris Thessaloniki. He made a bright start and played a part in their strong opening to the league campaign, but ultimately the Greek side decided against paying the fee required to make his loan permanent.
Now back across the Atlantic, he joins Toronto after the MLS side agreed the deal just before the transfer deadline closed last night.
It’s fair to say Cifuentes never really found his feet at Ibrox, and he once famously joked that the Glasgow weather didn’t suit him – so no such complaints in Toronto then! Good luck in Canada, buddy.
Seriously though, while it’s a shame things didn’t work out for him in Scotland, it’s good to see he’s got another move secured. We’d all have preferred a permanent exit this window, but with little real interest on the table, a loan with an option to buy feels like a sensible compromise.
