Rangers’ pursuit of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has taken another step forward, with a formal loan approach made to Crystal Palace as Russell Martin looks to upgrade his attacking options before the season kicks into full swing. And make no mistake – this is exactly the sort of deal Rangers need to be pushing hard for.

A Natural Fit on the Right – Gassama on the Left, Rak-Sakyi on the Right?

With Vaclav Cerny out of the picture, Rak-Sakyi could prove to be the ideal replacement on the right wing. Just imagine a fully fit Gassama cutting in from the left, and Rak-Sakyi doing the same from the right – the sort of wide threat that defenders hate dealing with and fans pay to see.

Gassama’s stunning debut cameo against Panathinaikos gave us a glimpse of what this Rangers side could look like with true wingers. But on the opposite flank, we’re still a long way off that level. That’s where Rak-Sakyi comes in.

He’s direct, fearless, and not afraid to take on his man. He likes to cut inside onto his stronger left foot, much like Cerny – but with a sharper edge in one-v-one situations. He brings goals, flair, and purpose – all of which Rangers have lacked on the right side for too long.

Palace Playing Hardball – But Rangers Still in the Mix

It’s understood that Rangers initially proposed a loan with an obligation to buy in the region of £8m. Palace, however, appear to be pushing for a permanent sale this summer and have rejected that offer. Rumours of a £10m clause are well wide of the mark – Ibrox sources have been quick to quash that.

Crucially, the deal isn’t dead. Rangers remain in the conversation and are keeping close tabs on the situation, even with Championship sides like Southampton sniffing around. The message from Russell Martin is clear: if Rak-Sakyi is still available as the window nears its end, Rangers are ready to move.

And frankly, we have to be.

Dowell’s Selection Highlights the Gap in Quality

The need for reinforcements out wide has been glaringly obvious, and never more so than when Kieran Dowell started on the flank in our Champions League qualifier. That’s not a dig at Dowell personally – but let’s be honest, most Rangers fans have seen enough. He doesn’t offer the pace, trickery or natural width that’s needed in European nights or tight SPFL games.

If Dowell is the current back-up, then Rak-Sakyi becomes more than a luxury – he’s a necessity.

What Rangers Can Expect from Rak-Sakyi

At just 22, Rak-Sakyi has already built a solid Championship résumé. His standout loan spell at Charlton in 2022/23 saw him bag 15 goals and 8 assists across all competitions. That earned him rave reviews and a growing fanbase. He was in fine form again last season at Sheffield United, bagging 7 goals and 2 assists.

He’s pacey, skilful, and thrives in transition – attributes that fit the high-tempo, high-pressing identity Russell Martin is clearly trying to instil. He can be raw at times, but his ceiling is high, and under the right coaching at Ibrox, he could flourish into a top performer.

More importantly, he’s exactly the sort of profile Rangers should be targeting: young, hungry, technically gifted, and with resale value if things go well.

Final Thoughts

If we’re serious about making progress this season, particularly in Europe, then we can’t afford to head into September with just Gassama and a patchwork of midfielders covering the wings.

Rak-Sakyi is available. The interest is real. The deal is there to be done.

Let’s go and get it over the line.
