As the countdown to Rangers’ Champions League qualifiers ticks into its final days, uncertainty looms over the future of Scottish international defender John Souttar. With his contract set to expire in 2026 and no new deal in sight, there are increasing signs that the 28-year-old’s time at Ibrox could be entering its final chapter.

John Souttar’s Contract Standoff and Uncertain Role

Souttar’s current deal still has one year remaining, but the lack of progress on a renewal has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike. The recent change in club ownership and football leadership may have temporarily stalled contract talks, but there are whispers that the delay may also be coming from the player’s side. With Robin Propper, Ben Davies, and Leon King all likely to leave—and further new additions potentially on the horizon—it’s possible Souttar is holding out to assess his first-team prospects.

Last season was far from his best, with a dip in form and a few unconvincing displays increasing the pressure on his place in the squad. While his game time was relatively consistent, his performances lacked the dominant edge many had hoped for. With a string of costly mistakes, especially in the earlier part of last season.

A Bargain Wage for a Regular Starter?

It’s understood Souttar earns in the region of £9,000–£10,000 per week, a figure in line with some fringe players like Leon King. When compared to Propper—who is reportedly on a higher salary despite being less than convincing—it’s easy to see why Souttar may be eyeing a raise. At 28, this could be his final big contract, and it’s natural that he may want to maximise his value.

John Souttar’s Injury Concerns Easing – But Is It Too Late?

Souttar’s early spell at Rangers was plagued by a recurrence of a serious Achilles injury, leaving many to question his long-term viability. But in recent months, his injuries have been more typical knocks—standard fare for a no-nonsense centre-half. That has offered some encouragement to those who believe he still has a role to play, especially given his homegrown status which is crucial for UEFA squad registration.

Defensive Departures Leave Rangers Thin

Leon Balogun has already departed, while Robin Propper and Ben Davies are expected to move on. Losing Souttar as well would leave a major void in the back line, and Rangers would need to act fast to plug the gap with less than a week before the European campaign begins.

Trabzonspor Preparing a Move

Reports in Turkey, which we take with a pinch of salt, suggest that Trabzonspor are readying a bid of around £850,000, coupled with a significant wage offer to entice Souttar to the Süper Lig. If true, it places pressure on Rangers to either cash in now or commit to a renewed deal. Failing to do either could see the player enter the final six months of his contract without resolution—free to speak to clubs abroad as soon as January.

The Clock Is Ticking

From a financial perspective, allowing a homegrown defender with sell-on value to leave on a free next summer would represent poor planning. But selling now, without reinforcements lined up, would leave Rangers light in defence at a critical moment.

It’s a dilemma that Russell Martin and the Ibrox board must resolve swiftly. Does Souttar still fit the vision for the club moving forward? If so, a new deal on improved terms must be tabled urgently. If not, Rangers may be forced to accept Trabzonspor’s bid and scramble for a replacement in a shrinking transfer window.

Either way, the Souttar saga is yet another reminder that decisive action is needed—and fast.
