Rangers are reportedly considering a summer move for Hull City winger Abu Kamara, with the 21-year-old seen as a potential solution to the Ibrox club’s right-wing shortage.

According to Sky Sports, Kamara is firmly on Russell Martin’s radar, and with Hull’s well-documented financial concerns and transfer restrictions biting hard, a deal could be struck for a reduced fee.

The wide man scored six goals and registered four assists in 40 Championship appearances last season, and has emerged as a key attacking threat in recent months.

From Norwich Prospect to EFL Breakout

Kamara began his career at Norwich City, coming through the Canaries’ academy before being sent out on loan to gain senior experience. His loan spell at Portsmouth in the 2023/24 season was particularly eye-catching, as he helped Pompey to the League One title, contributing eight goals and ten assists in 43 appearances.

His pace, direct style and ability to cut inside from the right or drive to the byline made him a nightmare for defenders at that level—and his transition to Championship football with Hull last season has shown he can make an impact at a higher level too.

The Attributes Rangers Need from Abu Karama

With Vaclav Cerny having left the club and ongoing fitness doubts surrounding Oscar Cortes, Rangers are short on natural right-sided wingers. Russell Martin’s system relies heavily on wide players who can stretch the pitch, beat their man and contribute in the final third.

Kamara’s key strengths include:

  • Acceleration and agility – he has a quick first step and regularly beats full-backs one-on-one.
  • Dribbling under pressure – often draws defenders in and creates space for others.
  • Final ball delivery – a sharp crosser who’s improved his assist numbers year-on-year.
  • Work rate – tracks back to support the full-back, an attribute Martin will value highly.

While primarily a right winger, Kamara is also capable of playing on the left or through the middle, offering the type of versatility that could be vital across a long season in multiple competitions.

Hull’s Financial Situation Could Open the Door

Hull City are currently under financial strain, with EFL restrictions limiting their ability to sign new players. It’s understood that offloading assets like Kamara could ease the pressure and open up room for squad reinforcements.

Although Kamara is under contract until 2026, sources suggest that Hull may be open to offers if the price is right—particularly if instalments or sell-on clauses are included. That situation could suit Rangers, who continue to operate with a level of financial prudence under the new regime.

Rangers’ Right-Winger Dilemma

With Ross McCausland rumoured to be on his way out and Kieran Dowell unlikely to play a role under Martin, Rangers are in urgent need of bodies—and quality—on the flanks.

Kamara could be the first piece of the puzzle, but there’s every chance the club may still look to bring in a second right-sided winger before the window closes, especially with European qualifiers on the horizon.

At just 21, Kamara fits the profile of a player who could develop quickly under Martin’s style of play—offering immediate value on the pitch and potential resale value further down the line.

Final Thoughts

Rangers need wide players who can inject pace, flair and unpredictability—and Abu Kamara has all of that in his locker. If a cut-price deal can be done with Hull City, this could prove to be a very smart move as Russell Martin continues reshaping the squad in his image.
