Rangers’ summer rebuild under Russell Martin continues at pace, but one potential move may already be faltering — with Southampton reportedly knocking back an opening bid for winger Samuel Edozie.
The 22-year-old was a player Martin knew well from their time together on the south coast, and it’s no surprise to see Rangers test the waters for a reunion. However, the early signs suggest this is going to be a tough one to get over the line.
Just under a year ago we reported Rangers were keen on a loan, but that deal ultimately fell away. Can Rangers get the Samuel Edozie deal across the line this time?
A £4m offer knocked back
While no official figure has been released, it’s believed Rangers’ first bid came in around the £4 million mark — well short of Southampton’s valuation. Edozie cost them £10m from Manchester City in 2022, and with interest from other clubs like Club Brugge, Saints are under no pressure to sell on the cheap.
Southampton are in a strong position, newly promoted back to the Premier League, and still viewing Edozie as a high-upside player who could contribute or command a sizeable fee later down the line. That means Rangers will likely need to significantly increase their offer — or walk away.
Why Russell Martin is interested
There’s no doubt Russell Martin sees Edozie as a fit for his Rangers project. The winger is quick, direct, and comfortable on either flank — a profile that suits the high-tempo, fluid system Martin is trying to build at Ibrox.
Having managed Edozie at Southampton, Martin will know exactly how to get the best out of him. But familiarity alone won’t get the deal done — not when Premier League clubs are involved and the fee is expected to rise into the £7–8m bracket, if not more.
What Edozie could bring to Rangers
Despite doubts about the deal, there’s plenty to admire in Edozie’s profile:
- Explosive pace and 1v1 ability, capable of breaking low blocks — something Rangers often face domestically.
- Versatility, having played on both flanks and in a central attacking role.
- A strong season on loan at Anderlecht, recording 4 goals and 4 assists in 23 games, showing maturity and end product.
He also fits the wider trend of younger, dynamic attackers being brought in to refresh Rangers’ forward line alongside names like Gassama and potentially Thelo Aasgard.
A deal that feels unlikely – for now
While the ambition from Rangers is clear, this is starting to feel like a move that might fall into the “one that got away” category. Southampton’s valuation is high, other clubs are circling, and unless Rangers are willing to push the boat out financially, this may be one rumour that fizzles out.
The club has been aggressive and creative in the market this summer, but Edozie’s profile and Premier League status make this a very different type of negotiation.

Final thoughts
There’s no shame in testing the waters — and Rangers fans will be encouraged to see the club going after players of Edozie’s quality. But this is a player with Premier League pedigree, a £10m price tag, and rival interest — all signs point to this being a tough deal to complete.
If the club can find a creative solution — whether that’s a loan with an obligation or a structured deal with heavy add-ons — there’s still hope. But right now, it’s wise not to get carried away.
