Rangers are reportedly on the verge of securing the signature of Norwegian midfielder Thelo Aasgaard, with reports suggesting a medical has been scheduled as the deal enters its final stages. The move would mark a shift in Russell Martin’s transfer activity this summer, transitioning from a defensive rebuild to strengthening the attacking third.
Defensive Business First, But Attacking Reinforcements Now Follow
Much of Rangers’ summer business to date has rightly focused on tightening the backline — a priority given last season’s inconsistencies. But Aasgaard’s arrival signals a welcome pivot to boosting creativity and attacking pace. With Champions League qualifiers looming and a title race to prepare for, Martin is clearly keen to add variety and dynamism to his forward options.
Who is Thelo Aasgård? Player Profile and Style of Play
Thelo Aasgaard, 22, is a left-footed, attack-minded midfielder known for his flair and directness. Able to operate as a No.10 or cutting in from the left, he brings a quick, aggressive style to the pitch. Aasgaard isn’t shy about taking on defenders or shooting from range — evidenced by several long-range goals in recent seasons. He’s fast, technically sharp, and unafraid to make things happen in tight areas.
Aasgaard’s ability to find space between the lines, carry the ball forward, and contribute in goals and assists makes him an ideal fit for the kind of high-tempo, possession-based football Martin is expected to bring to Ibrox.
Thelo Aasgaard’s Playing History and Stats
- Wigan Athletic (2020–2024) – Broke into the senior squad as a teenager and became a key attacking player.
- Luton Town (Loan, 2024) – Featured in 28 games across all competitions during his loan spell, scoring 4 goals and registering 3 assists.
His standout moment last season came with a stunning 25-yard goal against Millwall, underlining his threat from distance.
A Move Motivated by Ambition and National Team Hopes

With Luton relegated from the Championship, Aasgaard is seeking a club that offers both top-flight football and European competition. Norway manager Ståle Solbakken has publicly stated that Aasgaard must be playing at a higher level to be considered for senior international selection — and a move to Rangers ticks that box perfectly.
Joining a club with the stature of Rangers not only gives him the stage to perform regularly in front of big crowds, but also the opportunity to showcase his talent in continental competitions.
Rangers’ Reported £5 Million Investment Shows Intent
If completed, the deal is believed to be worth around £5 million, with the player expected to sign a long-term contract. It’s a significant outlay for a player from the English lower leagues, but one that reflects his age, potential, and playing style. It’s also a sign that Rangers are serious about adding match-winners in attacking positions, not just squad depth.
Rangers are very lacking in quality attacking options, Aasgaard adds something much needed — raw pace, unpredictability, and a willingness to shoot early. He’s a player who wants the ball, and he’s eager to make the step up. Under the guidance of Russell Martin, the Norwegian could thrive.
Final Thoughts: One to Watch This Season

There’s no doubt this move would represent a statement of intent. Aasgaard is a player with something to prove, and in a Rangers shirt, he might just find the platform he needs to fulfil his promise. For fans eager to see a faster, more aggressive attacking setup at Ibrox, this could be a very smart piece of business.
